Well, my birthday hit both ends of the spectrum this year. On Saturday (the 16th), hubby threw me
quite the BIRTHDAY FIESTA!! We had chili pepper lights, tissue flower garlands, giant hanging chili peppers, a cactus nametag holder and loud fiesta music. I even made little sombrero-shaped nametags for everyone. We set up a bar and served bottomless virgin strawberry margaritas and had an appetizer spread. We had said on the invite: "please bring your favorite fiesta finger food" - now let's count how many trays of taquitos there were on the table...one...two...three...four...five...six!! That's right - everyone brought taquitos - too funny. We did balance it with an
inordinate amount of chips and salsa - oh, and don't forget the liquid nacho cheese in the crockpot and - my personal weakness!
Dear Claire made me a beautiful cake in the shape of a cactus - it was incredible! She is my friend who is just as party-theme obsessed as me. We had a great time, and had about 30 people turn out for the event.
Here are some pics of the event:

Party guests...
Hubby and I...
We cleaned up and headed out to go pick up the kids around 10:45pm when the van broke down. I kid you not. I was driving the car and hubby was driving the van - he was able to hobble it to our friend's house about a mile away. My girlfriend drove us and all the kids home. I got home around midnight and of course the first thing I did was open all of my presents!! I got an incredible set of body lotion (buttercream scented)/body scrub(creamsicle scented)/face mask(pumpkin-papaya scented), a CD of my favorite comic from "Last Comic Standing" (he was quite a bit more crude on the CD than on NBC - bummer), candles, Pier One Imports giftcard, JoAnn's giftcard, 4 Starbucks giftcards, and $10 cash.
Monday was my
actual birthday (
10/18 you rock!). We had planned to have a mellow day at home and go out to dinner at Red Robin that evening. Hubby and the kids gave me an espresso machine, earrings and a bracelet - go me! But - here's where it all went weird...
The original plan had been to go out to Red Robin (partly because we had 2 free kids meal coupons and knew we'd get 4 free birthday sundaes for all of our October birthdays). But these plans had been made back when we had a working minivan. Back when all 6 of us could
fit into our vehicle. With the van at the shop, we now only had hubby's 4-door sedan with 5 seats. No driving for us. I came up with an idea. Since Red Robin is really only less than 10 minutes away - why don't we just make it a family adventure and take *cringe* the bus?! *insert fake enthusiastic smile*
Hubby just stared at me "You
HATE the bus. You
LOATHE the bus. You want to ride on a
bus on your birthday?!!" "Well, no I really don't. But I really DO want to go to Red Robin. And really - it's only a couple of miles. How bad can it be...?"
Let's just back the tape up right there. How many heinous experiences started out with the statement "How bad can it be...?" I'm here to testify that if you have to sink low enough to try to
trick yourself into believing something...you should just stop right there and not take another step.
Let's just start with the beginning of this "adventure": First of all, I hate the whole "the bus is coming" pressure. "The bus is coming!! We have to go N O W!!!" *Run around with hands waving in the air* Then there is the exact change issue. Obviously someone forgot to tell "Captain Busmaster" that the year is now 2004 and debit cards are the payment of choice. Can we just get on with the program and "swipe and ride"? *yeah, yeah I know - you can't do debit transactions on a moving bus...blah...blah...blah...just make my life more convenient please*
After walking in the dark rain with 4 small children *at which point I was in full regret of our "adventure"* crossing a busy street and then standing there for 5 minutes waiting for the bus - in the cold dark rain, on a busy street, with 4 children...*okay, okay - you get it already* It finally came. It was about this time that we boarded the bus that my 2 year old launched into a frantic deathgrip. *Apparently he isn't fond of busses - intuitive little guy that he is* The entire ride consisted of Dach gripping me with all of his might and his head buried in my chest, while the other 3 tried out every seat in the vicinity. "Let's sit sideways...let's sit forwards..." *repeat, infinity...*
When we arrived, we walked another block in the dark rain (yes, I DO have to mention that every time) to the restaurant. Dinner was okay, you know - the past 3 times I've been there, it just hasn't been anything to write home about foodwise. I don't know - maybe my tastes have changed. We had fun - and the staff sang to the 4 birthday people. We then had 40 minutes to kill. Because, in case you weren't aware of this - when you take the bus, you can't come and go as you please. You have to walk around a mall with an overtired 2 year old with no stroller who has a habit of going limp on the floor if you dare hold his hand.
Hubby sat on a bench with Dach on his lap while the girls and I checked out a shoe store. When we walked out - I could hear Dach wailing and then I noticed an abandoned "mall stroller" behind a sign. Someone apparently hadn't returned it to get back their .25 cent deposit. "A-HA!!"
I appeared around the corner with it and Zane asked "Where did you get that?" I looked at him very seriously and answered "God gave it to me." He looked slightly awed but didn't question me further. (I love to mess with him.) I plopped in Dach and he was instantly happy. We took a trek around JC Penney *note to self - must go back for brown hooded cable-knit zip front sweater for $20, although the blue one would match my new purse...* Hubby kept telling me the time (he's an early bird type) and I kept trying to stay inside as long as possible. Finally, we left with only 15 minutes to spare for our 5 minute walk in the
dark rain, to the *cringe* bus stop.
It was now 8:55pm...at a bus stop...in Seattle.
Needless to say all the commuters were long gone and it was reminiscent of the classic song "The freaks come out at night...". Right when we walked up there was a homeless-looking guy doing chin-ups on the bus sign, which he immediately traded in for a bout of pacing. He began to circle the bus stop area with remarkable speed...
Me: "What time is it now?"
Hubby: "8:56pm"
I do believe I asked him that same question every 50-60 seconds (our bus was due at 9:05pm). Meanwhile, the 4 kids are playing: "Guess the number on the oncoming bus", "how close can I stand to the edge without falling into the street", and "rub our hands and faces all over the bench and glass windows surrounding it".
DIS-IN-FECT-ANT.
I have never had such a close brush with adopting a germ-a-phobic paranoia disorder.
When the bus finally appeared, we boarded a la Dach back in a panic. The kids were desperate to sit in the back row, which we managed to completely fill up. *Wow - if only we could get someone to take our picture - this would be the perfect photo Christmas card!!*
Within about 4 blocks, one talkative drunk passenger entered the bus and sat as close to us as he possibly could. He took one look at the sea of small faces sitting between us and suddenly became a self-appointed birth control expert. *Why no, we haven't been able to figure out what causes this! We just keep ending up pregnant - the doctors are as stumped as we are! It's a total mystery.*
He also managed to enlighten us with "holiday tips with kids" for most of the major holidays.
Can I just say it already? Are we all going to be offended and think I'm a snob? Ready? Cover your ears if you are prone to writing reprimanding comments. Here it comes...
I'm too good for the bus.
There, I feel much better now. I know that sounds horrible - but come on. There are some seriously frea-ky people riding that thing and they seem to gravitate towards me. [By the way - I have a free pass to make fun of the bus, being that my dad drove one in this city for 15 years.] It is one entirely different thing to commute on it with normal business people - but the whole night-rider aspect - "no thanks, I'm trying to cut down!"
An-ee-way... so that was my birthday. It's a good thing I had that fiesta on Saturday or I would have been seriously singing the "Rode-a-freakshow-bus-on-my-birthday" blues...
